The US Army's 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta is one of two units principally tasked with counter-terrorist operations outside of the United States by the US governments –the other is the naval Special Warfare Development group. Delta Force was created by US Army Colonel Charles Beckwith in 1977 in direct response to numerous well publicized terrorist incidents that occurred in the 1970s. Modeled heavily on the British Special Air Service force, Delta Force is divided up into three operating squadrons. Its troops are primarily drawn from elite Ranger battalions and Special Forces groups, and they are equipped with the advanced weaponry and equipment available in the US special operations arsenal.
