The Akula class attack submarines were the quietest Russian nuclear submarines ever built, and the low noise levels came as a surprise to Western intelligence. All Akulas are armed with 533mm torpedo tubes (which can use Type 53 torpedoes), and 650mm torpedo tubes (which can use Type 65 torpedoes). Akulas can also be used to launch cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, or mines. The 650mm tubes can be fitted with liners to provide additional 533mm weapon launch capacity.
