Male Call, created by Milt Caniff during World War II, was a popular comic strip featuring the fetching "Miss Lace," distributed exclusively to the armed forces. When the famous B-17G was received by the 447th Bomb Group in the summer of 1944, Armorer Nick Fingelly was granted permission by Caniff to paint his bomber with the iconic comic character and the "Bit O'Lace" was born. She flew 83 missions during her illustrious career, with several pilots, and retired without having aborted a single mission.
Like many high-time airframes during the war, "Bit O' Lace" received her fair share of combat damage that was hastily patched-up in time for the next mission. The lightweight, fabric-covered control surfaces were some of the most vulnerable pieces of the aircraft and therefore, were often the first casualties of flak damage. Often there was little time to re-paint any replacement parts to match the original colors of the aircraft, resulting in a battle-scarred look that only added to the mystique of an aircraft that had seen it all and lived to tell the tale!
