The Douglas C-47 was based on the DC-3, but its wingspan was 6 inches longer and it had large cargo doors, reinforced fuselage, and cargo hooks under the center wing section. It had a crew of three and could carry up to 6,000 pounds of cargo or 28 troops. Other variants included the AC-47Q antiaircraft systems evaluation aircraft, the C-53 Skytrooper, and the R4D for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. 'Honey Bun III' belonged to the USAAF 436th TCG, 80th TCS.
