From January 1970 until July 1975 McDonnell Douglas F-4J 155854 was assigned to VF-84 "Jolly Rogers" onboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) Carrier Air Wing 6 (CVW-6). From February 1972 until December 1972 VF-84 and the USS FDR deployed to the Mediterranean Sea. In 1965 VF-84 began their Phantom II carrier days with theF-4B aboard the USS Independence. They flew the B variant until transferring to the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt in January 1970 and received the F-4J. For a brief period in 1975 they flew the F-4N.
