On May 1, 1944 a new squadron was formed and designated VF-84 "Wolf Gang" the USN's first day-fighter Corsair squadron. It was composed mostly of former VF-17 veterans and Lt. Cdr. Roger Hedrick former X/O of VF-17 was appointed the C/O. Later Hedrick assumed the job of the air group's commanding officer of VF-84. While flying from the USS Bunker Hill on February 25, 1945 Roger Hedrick destroyed 2 Franks and a Zero bringing his record to 12 aircraft destroyed and 4 damaged.
