On February 24, 1991 at 04:30 local time Operation Desert Storm began. The ground operation only took 100 hours with 1st and 2nd USMC Divisions fighting their way through more than 100 miles of Iraqi held territory defeating 7 Iraqi divisions, destroying more than 1,600 tanks and armored vehicles and taking over 22,000 prisoners. The M60A1 tanks with Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) have an extra layer of protection and it extends their life. These added tiles are backed by shaped charges that blow the tiles away when struck, reducing the damage.
