The Pershing II Weapon System was a solid-fueled two-stage ballistic missile designed and built by Martin Marietta as the United States Army's primary nuclear-capable theater-level weapon. On 12 December 1979, the military commander of NATO decided to deploy 572 new nuclear missiles in Western Europe: 108 Pershing II Missiles and 464 Ground Launched Cruise Missiles. All 108 Pershing II missiles were to be emplaced in West Germany. There were two prime movers for the launcher, both with a crane used for missile assembly and a generator to provide power for the launcher and missile. US units used the M983 HEMTT while tactical units in Germany used the M1001 MAN tractor. Since the new guidance system was self-orienting, the launcher could be emplaced on any surveyed site and the missile launched within minutes.
