Already a Hurricane ace with No. 242 Squadron, Wing Commander Douglas Bader was appointed to command the Spitfire IIA equipped Tangmere Wing in March 1941. He was taken prisoner in August 1941 by which time his total score was 20 and 4 shared destroyed, 6 and 1 shared probably destroyed and 11 damaged. The Spitfire modelled is P7966 from a batch of 1000 MkIIAs delivered between June 1940 and July 1941. As W/Cdr Bader's aircraft it carried the personalised code D-B.
